Lady Alicent Hightower, played by Emily Carey as a youth and by Olivia Cooke as an adult, is a character who will play a major role in the Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon.
Alicent comes from a noble line as her father, Ser Otto Hightower, was the Hand of the King and she grew up in nobility, becoming the Old King’s companion at the end of her life. Otto continued his role when King Viserys I Targaryen became king and often clashed with Viserys’ younger brother, Prince Daemon Targaryen.
Viserys and Aemma never had a male heir, and so Rhaenyra was chosen to be the next ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. But in the first episode, we see a young Alicent leave under the order of his father in the room of Viserys. But what happened?
Did Alicent sleep with Viserys?
Shortly after Aemma’s death, the Hand of the King, Otto Hightower, meets his daughter, Alicentwhose best friend is the daughter of Viserys, Rhaenyra. Otto implores the shy Alicent to visit the rooms of Viserys at night, where she goes with a history book and speaks maturely to him about her own grief over the recent death of her mother.
While Otto’s motives remain mostly ambiguous in Episode 1 of House of the Dragon, the book Fire and Blood makes his intentions clear by sending Alicent see Viserys. Otto seeks to place his own blood on the Iron Throne, and continue to grow his power in the kingdom.
By sending Alicent comfort Viserys after the death of his wife, the Hand of the King concocts a plan to makeAlicent the Queen. As a relatively young man who has yet to produce a male heir, Viserys is expected to remarry, so Otto takes this opportunity to make his daughter the next wife of Viserys. So no, it looks like Alicent didn’t sleep with Viserys in episode 1 of House of the Dragonhowever, this may change in the future.
What future for Alicent & Viserys?
As the trailers for House of the Dragon and the book Fire & Blood by George RR Martin, Alicent Hightower marries Viserys Targaryen in the series. Became the second wife of Viserys, Alicent is made queen consort at a young age, with the awkward progression of also marrying her best friend’s father.
While the books suggest that Rhaenyra and Alicent initially had a good relationship after marriage, The House of the Dragon suggests that their friendship could be destroyed much sooner.
