In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, we meet the human Halbrand when Galadriel lands on his raft in the Sea of Divide. The mysterious man doesn’t reveal much about himself, but he wears a pouch with a special coat of arms around his neck.

After being picked up from the sea by Elendil, Galadriel and Halbrand end up in Númenor. Halbrand is able to persuade Queen Regent Míriel to grant them hospitality for a few more days instead of killing or imprisoning them.

While Galadriel seeks a way off the Isle of Númenor, Halbrand has other plans. He’s trying to find work as a gunsmith. But nobody wants to hire him without a guild badge. When some Númenoreans seek a quarrel with Halbrand, he manages to steal the Guild Token from one of the men.

But the theft takes revenge. They ambush him and Halbrand has to take a few hits. However, Halbrand turns out to be an excellent fighter and he is able to take out the group of men but is captured by the city guard.

In prison, Halbrand receives a visit from Galadriel. During a trip to the Hall of Wisdom with Elendil, she not only found out what lies behind the mysterious sign of Sauron, but also discovered the origin of the crest on Halbrand’s pouch.

Halbrand seems to be the king of the southern lands. Galadriel says that long ago the man who bore the crest united the scattered tribes of the Southlands under one banner. The Elf goes on to say that this banner could once again unite the tribes in the fight against evil.

But Halbrand has no interest in a throne, for his ancestors took a blood oath with Morgoth. He is not a hero, because it was his family that lost the war back then. But Galadriel replies that her family started the war and together they can cleanse their bloodlines in Middle-earth.

Does Halbrand appear in Tolkien’s books?

The character Halbrand seems to be a pure invention of the Amazon series. But it cannot be denied that he is very reminiscent of Aragorn. Like Aragorn, he takes a different name (Aragorn is called Strider at the beginning of The Lord of the Rings), has no interest in a throne, and visually he seems to be based on the King of Gondor and Arnor.

A king of the Southlands is not known from the work of JRR Tolkien, however the Haradrim frequently switched sides between evil and good.
