Update from Wednesday, October 12, 6:53 a.m.: With a view to the planned bomb disposal this Wednesday (October 12), the public order office of the city of Frankfurt has published a general decree.

It states, among other things: “In the period from 9:00 a.m. to the end of the defusing measure (probably 6:00 p.m.), it is forbidden to go into the red-marked evacuation zone inside and outside of buildings, on streets, paths and squares […] stop or enter. Therefore, all persons staying there have to leave this area by 8:59 a.m..” If residents or other unauthorized persons fail to comply, “the enforcement by means of direct coercion” is threatened.

The city of Frankfurt has opened the ball sports hall for people affected by the bomb evacuation. From 8 a.m. those affected can find a temporary roof over their heads here. However: “An additional transport service from the evacuation area is not planned. The ball sports hall is easily accessible by public transport,” as stated in the general decree.

However, for people with restricted mobility who need transport or accommodation for the duration of the evacuation measure on Wednesday (October 12), there is the option of contacting the fire brigade online here or by calling the citizen hotline on 069-212-111.

Bomb in Frankfurt: live ticker for defusing – defusing or detonating in Bockenheim?

First report from Tuesday, October 11, 8:24 p.m.: On Wednesday (October 12th) the time has come. The 500-kilogram World War II bomb found on Monday in the Frankfurt-Bockenheim district is to be defused. By 9 a.m., around 20,000 people must have left the area between Rebstockpark and Katharinenkreisel. The responsible demolition experts expect a complex operation. It is still unclear whether the defusing actually succeeds.

On the Twitter channel of the Frankfurt fire department, Alexander Majunke from the explosive ordnance clearance service recently stated that it was not yet known which ignition was on the explosive device. The bomb is currently still encrusted with dirt that can only be removed when the exclusion zone around the site is free. The experts from the explosive ordnance disposal service will then decide whether the bomb will be rendered harmless by hand or remotely, or whether it will be detonated.

Bomb in Frankfurt: live ticker reports on evacuation

While Majunke and his colleagues take care of defusing the World War II bomb, traffic in the evacuation area, which affects the Bockenheim and Gallus districts, will be at a standstill from 9 a.m. Numerous bus and train lines as well as the A648 are affected by the temporary closure. The city of Frankfurt has published a list of the affected bus and train lines. In addition, the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsbund (RMV) keeps its customers up to date on changes to the timetable via an app and on rmv-frankfurt.de.

The city of Frankfurt appeals to the affected citizens to follow the call for evacuation. No one is allowed to remain in their home at their own risk. In case of doubt, the police are authorized to evacuate apartments. The authorities explain: “Please consider that the start of defusing and thus the end of all measures and closures depend on a quick and orderly evacuation process. Help yourself to ensure that everything runs smoothly and that all measures can be completed quickly.”
