Slovenia has exposed Kremlin propaganda. Russia illustrated allegations against Ukraine, among other things, with a photo from the neighboring country.
The Slovenian government responded on Wednesday with a denial to a “misleading” tweet by the Russian Foreign Ministry. In it, accusations that Ukraine was planning to use a “dirty bomb” were “backed up” with photos. One of the pictures is from Slovenia.

“Radioactive waste is stored safely and under supervision in Slovenia. It will not be used to make dirty bombs,” the government said on its Twitter profile.
Russia makes fake propaganda with Slovenian photo
One of the photos used in the tweet to refer to Ukrainian capacities for making the “dirty bomb” belongs to the Slovenian Radioactive Waste Agency (ARAO). The image dates from 2010 and was used in specialist lectures and information materials. “The photo was published (by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, note) without ARAO’s knowledge,” the Slovenian government said.
The photo shows items wrapped in plastic bags with the symbol for radioactivity and the inscription “radioaktivno”, which means radioactive in Slovenian. According to the statement from Ljubljana, these are smoke detectors that are in general use. “They do contain a radioactive Source, but none of those listed in the table below the photo,” it said. Ionization smoke detectors (I detectors) contain weakly radioactive substances, which is why they have to be disposed of as nuclear waste.
