60 hackers met in Bonn for a duel, including many students from cyber security courses in Bochum, Paderborn or Sankt Augustin. Most start in three-man teams to solve the tasks. The fastest win.

The place where the hacker elite from all over Germany meets is an inconspicuous office building in the middle of the old government and embassy district in Bonn. The IT giant IBM has a branch here and makes its rooms available for the “Capture the Flag” (CTF) competition. Next door, the house of the former Iranian embassy is rotting away.

In the days of the capital, this event would have been highly suspicious, but today the focus is on having fun and networking and exchanging ideas with like-minded people. A team from the University of Paderborn “UPB Hack” sits in an open room surrounded by curtains. That looks very futuristic.

crack websites

On their laptops, the cyber security students try to crack a website set up especially for the competition. The Euskirchen-based cyber security company Laokoon and the IT consultancy CGI from Cologne set it up via the “Hack The Box” platform. The challenge is to find a password and username to gain access to the system.

Where’s Dylon Ellwood?

Another task is to track down dates of stay through an online profile on the business network “LinkedIn”. Here, too, the organizers have created a profile just for the competition. Dylon Ellwood is the CEO of the Dystopian Security Agency. His profile is the starting point to find out where he is. It’s a digital scavenger hunt.

Swiss student wins

In the end, a student from Switzerland wins the competition. He was the fastest. No wonder – he was already advising global corporations on cyber security when he was still younger. As a prize, he receives further training courses worth 25,000 euros.
