Nobody would have expected that: diesel is becoming cheaper and moving towards super. “Today” spoke to an expert about the phenomenon.

A Chamber of Commerce representative had warned in the fall: “It is to be expected that the diesel price will rise to around 2.50 euros and the petrol price to over 2 euros in the next few months.” Bernd Zierhut, chairman of the energy trading specialist group in the Upper Austrian Chamber of Commerce, did not have a bleak picture of the future.

Quite the opposite: you don’t have to dig as deep into your pocket to fill up. Super is currently a good 1.50 euros. Diesel doesn’t cost much more either.

“Today” wanted to know what that has to do with. But: Even Martin Grasslober, Head of Transport Economics at the ÖAMTC, cannot explain the surprising cost development.

“There is a lack of transparency as to how the prices are composed,” he sees “a fundamental problem”. “From our point of view, the mineral oil industry needs an explanation here.”

Because even if you have to shell out significantly less at the pump, according to Grasslober, fuel still costs too much. “According to oil prices, diesel is currently more than 15 cents and petrol around 10 cents too expensive.”

And: If you look at the current publicly available product listings, the diesel price should go down even further.

Price usury at Easter?

Vacation time is traditionally fuel usury time. So will prices go up again at Easter? “I hope not,” says Grasslober. “But it is to be feared that that will happen.”

To be on the safe side, the expert recommends always comparing the costs and refueling in good time. The cheapest fuel pumps can be found at the ÖAMTC and here: spritpreisrechner.at
