According to the first findings of the traffic police, the driver of a passenger car drove at a massively increased speed from the Freiburgerbrücke entrance onto the A2 in the direction of Bern/Lucerne.

When entering the Black Forest tunnel, there was a rear-end collision with two other cars at high speed.

One of the vehicles involved overturned, collided with the tunnel wall and lay on its side.

The suspected cause of the accident, a 54-year-old Italian citizen living in Switzerland, was taken to the emergency room with serious injuries.

A blood and urine sample was ordered on behalf of the Basel-Stadt public prosecutor. His driver’s license was taken from him by the traffic police on site.

Two other drivers, a 27-year-old Italian citizen living in Switzerland and a 49-year-old German citizen, were slightly injured in the accident and taken to the University Hospital by the Basel-Stadt rescue team for further investigations.

The Black Forest tunnel was completely closed in the direction of Switzerland for around two hours, which led to major traffic disruptions throughout the canton.

Shortly before 5 p.m., police opened the right lane to traffic. The full opening should take place around 7 p.m.

The Basel-Stadt canton police and the professional fire brigade and paramedics from the Basel-Stadt rescue team were deployed. The Basel-Landschaft police also provided support with a drone team to survey the scene of the accident.
