From Teen Star to Soft Porn Star: The Turbulent Life of Aaron Carter (34)

Aaron was the younger brother of ‘Back Street Boys‘-singer Nick Carter, and built his own singing career in his younger years. In the 1990s, he signed on for five albums that quickly sold out, and by his tenth birthday he had already sold one million albums. His greatest hits? ‘I want candy‘ and ‘That’s how I beat Shaq‘.

It gave him the chance to support Britney Spears and his older brother’s Backstreet Boys. Carter also popped up in hit TV series like ‘Lizzie McGuire‘, ‘7th heaven‘, ‘Sabrina the teenage witch‘, and ‘House of Carters‘, a reality series about his family.

The girl idol was also at the center of a love triangle during that time with actresses Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan, who would argue for years – including long after Carter disappeared from their lives.

However, Carter’s career quickly went downhill after that. He still took part inDancing with the stars‘ – the painful fate of more stars on their return – and played in a few musicals, but increasingly made the news with less pleasant episodes: he was arrested several times for drunk driving, was admitted several times for drug addictions, went bankrupt, and had a particularly tumultuous relationship with girlfriend Melanie Martin, with whom he had a son.

Psychological problems

In recent years, Carter has mainly attracted attention with family vicissitudes: in 2019 his brother asked for and received a contact ban after Aaron had threatened to kill his pregnant wife and unborn child. That same year, Carter also accused his three-year-older sister Leslie – who had died of a drug overdose in 2012 – of sexually abusing him when he was ten years old.

All this would be a result of his psychological problems: Carter said he suffered from panic attacks, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. During that period, he also sounded the alarm on social media. “LEAVE ME ALONE. FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. I BEG YOU. PLEASE,” he wrote in a message to his brother. “Nick has bullied me all my life. He tortured me when I was a child. And everyone knows this. IT WAS KNOWN. And now you are afraid of the truth.”

“It runs in the family,” he later explained on Twitter. “I never wanted to tell anyone about this. But I have it too. My sister Leslie was bipolar. She took lithium, but didn’t like how it made her feel. When she wasn’t taking her medication, she was doing things I honestly believe she didn’t really want to do… My sister raped me from when I was 10 to 13 years old.”

Carter later had a giant tattoo of a butterfly on his face, in honor of that same sister.

Vicious circle

In 2017, Carter announced on social media that he was bisexual. “It’s important for me to say this,” he said. “Because it weighs on me, almost half of my life. I’m not ashamed, but I want this burden off my shoulders.”

In 2020 Carter made his debut on the porn site CamSoda. “I’ll just lay down on a piano and what kinky stuff do, but you have to pay to see it,” it sounded, in a mournful attempt to monetize what remained of his celebrity. “I’m surprised I’m doing this because I actually suffer from body dysmorphism. So it’s ironic that I’m comfortable doing this.”

Carter’s vicious circle – from teenage star to soft porn star – came to an end on Saturday, he turned 34. It is not clear what caused the man to die. The Los Angeles Police Department is calling it “a suspicious death,” and an investigation has been launched.
