Preview women’s road race 2022 European Championships | Does Wiebes follow Jakobsen’s example?

A week after Fabio Jakobsen’s triumph, the women can also compete for that coveted European title in road cycling. Ellen van Dijk will defend her title, but with Lorena Wiebes leaving, there is a fear of major competition from her own corner. In the leader’s jersey made a preview!

The European Elite Cycling Championship has only been on the calendar since 2016. In five of the six European Championships, the Dutch ladies were supreme with the victories of Anna van der Breggen, Marianne Vos, Amy Pieters, Annemiek van Vleuten and Van Dijk. Only in 2018 did they have to leave the victory to another country, because then it was Marta Bastianelli who took the flowers on behalf of Italy.

Course, weather and times European Championship women’s 2022 road race

The riders start their race in the town of Landsberg am Lech, which is located slightly more to the west than Munich. From there they will start a journey of almost 130 kilometers towards the Bavarian capital where the finish line has been drawn. In total, the riders will have to choose 746 altimeters during the road race.

After about fifteen kilometers the women can go down to the Ammersee. Then they reach a hilly phase, although it is never really difficult there. The only ‘real’ climb is after 65 kilometers: it is 1300 meters long at 4.8% on average. So no mountain where you can make a difference.

After that, we drive down for about twenty kilometers in the direction of the final circuit in Munich. After the first passage of the finish line, the riders are allowed to take on this local lap of thirteen kilometers twice more. Since there are no mountains to be seen there, it is written in the stars that there will be a sprint for the European title.

Weather
Will it rain on Sunday or not? With a chance of precipitation of about 30 to 40 percent, that is about the key question. In any case, the riders do not have to complain about the temperature (21 degrees). The wind is blowing from the northwest at force one.

Start: 11:30 a.m.

When you think of bunch sprinters, there’s really only one woman right now that stands head and shoulders above the rest: Lorena Wiebes. The lady from Team DSM, who will play for Team SD Worx from next season, won just about everything there is to win last season, culminating in the opening stage of the Tour de France Femmes on the Champs-Élysées. If Wiebes has good legs, it will be a very difficult story for the other girls.

We mentioned earlier that also outgoing champion Ellen van Dijk will appear at the start. She could just prevent a bunch sprint from a late dropout, but in an interview with In the leader’s jersey showed the 35-year-old rider to have no personal ambitions. The same would apply to Demi Vollering, but the Team SD Worx rider cannot participate because of her injury in the Tour of Scandinavia. The Netherlands does take Charlotte Kool to Munich. Kool normally takes care of the lead-out for Wiebes, but the latter was not allowed to sprint…

Ellen van Dijk took the title last year, but will ride for Lorena Wiebes on Sunday.

If we look at the other countries, Italy is a very strong bloc. Because they have Marta Bastianelli, the lady who ran off with the title in 2018. In addition, there is the world champion Elisa Balsamo, although she does not come into the picture in the second part of the season. However, a strong Balsamo must be able to compete with Wiebes… Met Barbara Guarishi and Rachele Barbieric the blue formation also has a few outsiders on board.

France also looks good in Munich. Of Clara Copponic (stage winner in the Women’s Tour) and Audrey Cordon-Ragot (winner Postnord Vårgårda WestSweden) should definitely be on the podium. A top three listing should also be possible for the fast Emma Norsgaard, which has also proven itself several times to be on the rise. Other outsiders for the star jersey are Susanne Andersen (Norway), Amalie Dideriksen (Denmark) and Marta Lach (Poland).
