The hospital had to be partially evacuated. Some patients were redirected to other hospitals on Saturday evening, because of this funny intervention and the risks it could cause.

This is an unusual discovery made by hospital members of the Sainte-Musse emergency department in Toulon, and reported by Nice morning. According to our colleagues, an 88-year-old man showed up on Saturday evening with a First World War shell in his anus. A device measuring 18 cm long by 9 cm wide and which the octogenarian claimed to have found at his brother’s house, according to a police Source at BFM Toulon Var.

“An apple, a mango or even a shaving foam … We are used to finding unusual objects inserted where it should not be. But a shell? Never!”, Explains to the newspaper, one of the members emergency hospital staff working that day.

The hospital partially evacuated

The octogenarian assured caregivers that the shell was demilitarized. The latter, however, wanted to make sure of these comments by calling deminers. During this time, the hospital management supervised “the organization of a partial evacuation of the establishment towards the main hall, in particular the pediatric part, and the confinement of the most distant services, with the help of the security and firefighters on site”, details the daily.

For “a few hours” patients were also diverted to other hospitals, the newspaper said. Only the gynecology and maternity services functioned almost normally. A tent was set up with the patient inside.

An astonishing scene, confirmed half-word by the management of the hospital. Contacted by Nice morningshe confirms, “an event that occurred from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Saturday evening which required the intervention of deminers, the evacuation of adult and pediatric emergencies as well as the redirection of the emergency flow.”

The operated patient

Arrived on the spot, the deminers confirmed that the device was not explosive. “They reassured us by telling us that it was a collector’s shell from the First World War, offered to the Poilus”, specifies a hospital staff.

The patient was then operated on by a surgeon to recover the object through the abdomen. The octogenarian is doing well and the shell has been handed over to the deminers. On Monday morning, the management thanked the staff by email.
