Summer Biathlon in Ruhpolding: All results at a glance

+++ August 25th, 2022: No World Cup races in the living room: Summer World Cup without biathlete Preuss +++

Biathlete Franziska Preuss only remains a spectator at the Summer World Championships in her “living room” in Ruhpolding. While her teammates are fighting for World Championship medals on roller skis in the Chiemgau Arena from Friday to Sunday, Preuss is training. Because once again the 28-year-old was slowed down by health problems. After she started training in the spring, she was forced to take a break due to an infection. After starting training again, the infection came back and gave her a severe frontal sinus infection.

“In our opinion, she started a little too early and did a little too much. After the relapse, we made a cut at the beginning of June and said, now she has to get well first,” said women’s discipline trainer Kristian Mehringer of the German Press Agency . The girlfriend of ex-world champion Simon Schempp used the break for a trip to Sylt, among other things. “The break was very relaxing, especially for my sinuses, my head and hopefully also for my immune system,” Preuss wrote on Instagram.

Now she’s only in her fifth week of training and “we want to build her up in a structured way. Our goal is for her to be in good shape in the winter, so that she can continue to work continuously for the next three months without stress,” Mehringer explained. Preuss has been missing a lot of training since last December and “now we have to try to stabilize her”.

Preuss has suffered many health setbacks in her career. This was also the case in the previous season, when a foot injury and shortly afterwards a corona infection put her out of action for several weeks, so that the highly talented ski hunter again missed many of her goals. “I wasn’t able to achieve all my goals this winter, but the good thing about sport is that there will be new goals next season,” Preuss remains confident.

She had already been rewarded at the Olympics in Beijing, where she finally won her first Olympic medal with relay bronze. “I would be lying if this medal made up for everything I missed before, but this medal still gave me a lot of joy! And this medal shows that fighting is worthwhile.”

+++ 08/23/2022: Ex-world champion Doll renounces the summer world championships of biathletes +++

Ex-world champion Benedikt Doll will not be taking part in the summer world championships for biathletes this week in Ruhpolding due to the birth of his first child. The 32-year-old from the Black Forest announced this on Facebook on Tuesday. “I have children and of course that takes a lot of energy and time,” said Doll: “Training is just a little behind. I just can’t leave home and would like to use the time with the child and my wife .”

The Summer World Championships start this Friday and last on the World Cup routes in the Chiemgau Arena until Sunday. Doll was originally supposed to lead the German men’s team. It is still unclear whether the three-time World Cup winner will take part in the German championships in Oberhof in Thuringia next week. “Maybe it will work out next week at the DM, that remains to be seen,” said the two-time Olympic bronze medalist.

+++ August 17th, 2022: Biathlon Summer World Championships: Germans almost in full force in Ruhpolding +++

Led by Olympic champion Denise Herrmann, the German biathletes will start at the Summer World Championships in Ruhpolding from August 25th to 28th. The disciplines super sprint, sprint and mass start are on the program in the Chiemgau Arena. In addition to Herrmann, the ladies also have Vanessa Voigt, Vanessa Hinz, Janina Hettich-Walz, Franziska Hildebrand, Anna Weidel, Marion Wiesensarter and Juliane Frühwirt. On the other hand, Franziska Preuss is missing, who had to struggle with health problems in the pre-season and is still a bit behind in training for the winter.

For the men, Benedikt Doll leads the team of eight, which includes Johannes Kühn, Roman Rees, Philipp Nawrath, David Zobel, Lucas Fratzscher, Philipp Horn and Justus Strelow.

In recent years, the first guard of the German team had skipped the summer title fights, but in front of the home crowd it is now almost the best line-up at the start. “I’m really looking forward to my first Summer Biathlon World Championships in Ruhpolding. It’s great that so many international biathlon stars are registered for the competitions,” said Herrmann.

A total of 28 nations with around 400 athletes have registered for the races in the Chiemgau Arena, including the Italian Dorothea Wierer and the Swedes Elvira Öberg and Sebastian Samuelsson. In the past summer title fights, it was only about half of the nations.
