The Rings of Power: Adar Wants Sauron’s Power – Is He Morgoth’s True Successor?

Is Adar and not Sauron the direct successor to Morgoth? That question comes after the character newly created for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power first appeared in the third episode of the series.

Morgoth was a fallen Vala who brought evil to Middle-earth. He caused numerous elves to die in a bloody battle against him. Morgoth seduced the Maia Sauron and used his obsession with order to his advantage. As a result, he paved the way for evil as the first Dark Lord.

After the Elves managed to thwart Morgoth’s plans, Sauron was gone. The years of peace began, but these were only appearances. Hidden underground, the orcs, Morgoth’s followers, raised a large army. However, contrary to our knowledge, Sauron may not be responsible for the rapid growth of the orcs.

The Amazon series introduces a character that takes Sauron’s place. In Tolkien’s works, Sauron had fallen from Morgoth’s grace after a mission gone awry, so he withdrew. He was therefore absent from the fall of Morgoth, allowing him to withdraw quietly and secretly.

It is therefore not unlikely that the Dark Lord might have chosen a new lieutenant, to whom he had handed all his knowledge and power. That someone could be the mysterious Adar. We meet him for the first time in the series in an underground camp of the orcs.

Who is Adar?

The character Adar was created specifically for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, so little is known about him. It is suspected that the leader of the orcs could be a fallen elf. His appearance speaks for itself. Since Orcs were once Elves corrupted by Morgoth, Adar may have been one of them.

The name “Adar” is also another indication of his Elvish origin. “Adar” means “father” in Elvish. He could bear his name as a title, either because he is the leader of the Orcs, or because Morgoth’s apprentice, the creator of them.

A common assumption is that Adar is a lieutenant of Sauron and acts on his behalf. While all follow a false trail in the south, Sauron might roam in the shadows. This allows him to change his shape and sneak in unnoticed by the elves, men or dwarves. Skillful misdirection helps Sauron achieve his goals.

On the other hand speaks Adar’s obvious dislike for Sauron. When Waldreg mistakes him for the Dark Lord, Adar reacts indignantly. He forces the old man to sacrifice Rowan, a boy from Waldreg’s village of Tirharad.

After Sauron’s disappearance, Adar may have hoped to take his post and lead his reign of terror himself. Sauron’s return could derail those plans. A threat to the “Father of Orcs”.

But despite numerous rumours, there is still no trace of Sauron. So far, all indications of his whereabouts lead to the southern lands. To Adar and possibly far from Sauron. The Second Age of Middle-earth clearly hides many mysteries and even knowing the broad plot of Tolkien’s The Silmarillion, many questions remain unanswered in the series.
