“House of the Dragon” made short work of Vaemond Velaryon with a beheading in the throne room. The book by George RR Martin reveals that it could have been even worse.

  • “House of the Dragon” proved once again in Episode 8 that Damon is not a man of big words.
  • He beheaded Corlys Velaryon’s brother Vaemond after he insulted Rhaenyra and her children.
  • A horrible death, but George RR Martin proves it could get worse.

Note: The children of the future queen are not called bastards. That’s a lesson Vaemond Velaryon learned in a particularly gruesome way in Episode 8 of House of the Dragon, when Daemon simply chopped off Corlys’ brother’s head in the middle of the throne room.

Previously, Vaemond proposed himself as the new ruler of Driftmark after his brother Corlys was badly wounded in a battle on the Steppingstones. Corlys himself chose his grandson Lucerys Velaryon, although everyone secretly knows that Harwin Kraft, not Corlys’ son Laenor, is the real father of Lucerys.

Nevertheless, Lucerys is officially a Velaryon, which Vaemond does not acknowledge. When King Viserys refuses Vaemond’s request, he becomes abusive and loses his life. A cruel death – but it could have been worse.

In Fire and Blood, the book by George RR Martin, Vaemond is also beheaded by Daemon, but on Rhaenyra’s orders. Afterwards, Vaemond’s body was brought to the dragon Syrax, who ate the corpse.

Although fans of the series are always asking for more dragon scenes, this change is understandable. On the one hand, a scene with Syrax would have increased the budget, although this event is not necessary, and it would not have suited the Rhaenyra we know from “House of the Dragon”.

So far, the Rhaenyra from the series doesn’t give us any reason not to like her. Although she now has a few enemies, she is actually not guilty of anything. The murder of Laenor is not her fault either, since he is only considered dead in the series, but actually disappeared with Qarl.

So it suits Daemon much better that he murders Vaemond of his own accord, after all, his wife/niece and grandnephews/stepsons were insulted. Daemon’s action doesn’t seem to have any consequences either, everyone obviously knew that Vaemond had gone too far.

Two episodes left before Season 1 of House of the Dragon is over. With the death of King Viserys, the dance of the dragons should be just around the corner and thus set the direction for season 2, which should (almost) get by without major jumps in time.
