The plane that disappeared off Costa Rica has apparently crashed. Five Germans are missing – probably including the founder of McFit.

A private plane is off the coast of Costa Rica disappeared and apparently crashed. When searching for the machine, the emergency services discovered several pieces of debris in the sea. According to information from “Bild am Sonntag”, McFit founder Rainer Schaller and four other German passengers are said to have been on board the small aircraft.

A spokeswoman for RSG-Group GmbH, who gym chain operates, is said to have confirmed to the newspaper that Schaller, his girlfriend and their children were in the machine. Costa Rican media now also assume that Schaller and his family were on board.

Although there was no indication of the passengers, the machine seems to have crashed according to new findings: Approx 28 kilometers from Limón airport, parts of a fuselage, seats and a bag are said to have been sighted during a reconnaissance flight, the Costa Rican television channel Teletica reported on Saturday, citing the Central American country’s Ministry of Public Security.

Plane disappeared from radar off Costa Rica

Communication with the machine was broken around 6 p.m. (local time) – i.e. early Saturday morning at two a.m. German time – Costa Rica’s Ministry of Public Security initially announced on Facebook. That airplane was therefore on the way from Mexico to Puerto Limón on the Caribbean coast of the Central American country. According to the ministry, investigations have been initiated jointly with neighboring countries.

“The plane is about 25 miles from the airport lemon gone off the radar. The plane was due to land at 6:58 p.m., we lost it at 2,000 feet,” Civil Aviation Authority Director Fernando Naranjo told Teletica.

Due to unfavorable weather conditions, the search work was initially stopped during the night. On Saturday they should Coast Guard and the Airspace Surveillance Authority resume the search. The debris has now been found.

Plane missing: German embassy in Costa Rica in contact with authorities

“The case is known to us,” it said on Saturday from the foreign office in Berlin. “Our embassy in San Jose is in contact with the local authorities to clarify the matter.”

According to media reports, the missing machine was a business jet of the Piaggio P.180 Avanti type. She started in Palenque in the Mexican state of Chiapas in the afternoon. The ruined city of the Mayas there is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important archaeological sites in Mexico. (dpa/fmg)
