An aerial bomb from the Second World War was found during exploratory work in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg. The defusing of the dud by the explosive ordnance clearance service is delayed.

The dud cannot yet be defused because many people drove to the Wilhelmsburg train station after work – the train station is, however, in the restricted area. The police must now evacuate the station before work on the bomb can begin. In addition, the evacuation of residents continues. They had to temporarily leave their homes 300 meters from where they were found on Thielenstraße – but the lights were still on in some apartments. Around 4,500 people are registered in the affected residential area. Residents within a radius of 1,000 meters should keep windows and doors closed.

Bomb is nine meters down

A specialist company had examined the ground on the construction site in Thielenstrasse and discovered the 450-kilogram American World War II bomb with a rear-impact fuse. It lies in the ground water nine meters deep in the earth. The fire brigade explained that duds are not usually blown up in Hamburg. Instead, the explosive ordnance clearance service will unscrew the detonator.

Blocking of the B75 in both directions

The bomb disposal will result in restrictions on road traffic and on trains and buses: the B75 between Georgswerder and Kornweide is currently closed, as is the Niedergeorgswerder dike between Langenvogel and Kirchdorfer Straße.

Train: Train traffic between Hamburg and Harburg affected

Regional, long-distance and S-Bahn trains are also stopped on the train. The entire train traffic on the route will be affected as soon as the demolition officer gives the signal, said a railway spokeswoman. This applies to all trains that travel between Harburg and Hamburg via the Elbe, for example in the direction of Bremen, Osnabrück, Cologne or Hanover.

The Hochbahn announced that buses will be diverted in the affected area. Bus route 13 will be extended from Veddel to Harburg.

Emergency accommodation and citizen hotline for those affected

According to the fire brigade, there is emergency accommodation for those affected in the district school at Stübenhofer Weg 20a, there is space for 500 people. A bus transfer runs there from the intersection of Krieterstrasse and Thielenstrasse.

For questions about the defusing of the bomb, the police have set up a citizen hotline on 040/4286 54451 and 040/4286 54452.
