34-year-old Mauro Caviezel fell badly in the Lake Louise Super-G. Now the skier reported on Instagram.

A cruciate ligament tear, internal ligament tear, Achilles tendon tear, shoulder dislocations, fibula fractures, a complicated hand injury and eye problems – Mauro Caviezel always came back. On Sunday, the 34-year-old tried again, probably not quite at his best after fighting back for almost two years.

Traumatic brain injury! Swiss motionless in the snow

In January 2021, he suffered a traumatic brain injury in a fall during training. In Lake Louise, in his favorite discipline Super-G, he made his comeback and fell again. The leader, Marco Odermatt, covered his face in the leader box.

A short time later, the first diagnosis was lacerations to the face and concussion. Caviezel was flown back to Switzerland on Monday morning. He got there on Tuesday. The medical examinations are currently underway.

The Swiss also reported on Instagram. He showed his bruised face on a post. He wrote: “Not the comeback face I imagined.” He thanked for the positive news and continued: “I will be beautiful again.”

In Lake Louise, Caviezel got caught in a gate and immediately fell. Then he slid a few meters down the icy slope. There he stayed. Shortly before, the speed measurement had shown 115 kilometers per hour. For a long time it was not clear how he was doing. He moved only sparsely, one had to assume the worst.

The rescue helicopter rushed over. And then came the redeeming image: Caviezel was standing again. But he was marked, bleeding from his face. After all, he could stand up and move on his own. Of course, the helicopter landed anyway and took the ski racer to the hospital.

Caviezel, the roly-poly, had suffered many setbacks in the last two years, but he never gave up. In Lake Louise he already competed in the downhill on Saturday, but didn’t finish there, he fell there too. He paid “tuition”, he said on SRF.

Still, he was happy to be back on skis. “I’m very grateful I’ve made it this far. But now I want to take it one step further.” It still needs work because not everything is the way it used to be, he said. He ended his Instagram post with the words: “I’m fine”.
