The ASEAG buses in Aachen and the city region are idle on Monday and Tuesday. The Verdi union is calling for a two-day strike.

Aachen – Local transport in Aachen is paralyzed for two days by a strike. There are no ASEAG buses on Monday (March 20) and Tuesday (March 21). The Aachen city region is also affected.

“Verdi has called on ASEAG employees to go on warning strike on Monday, March 20th and Tuesday, March 21st, as part of the ongoing wage negotiations. The ASEAG buses in Aachen and the city region will therefore not run on these two days from the start of operations to the end of operations,” the transport company announced.

Another ASEAG strike in Aachen – local transport paralyzed

  • What? ASEAG in Aachen goes on strike
  • When? On Monday, March 20th and Tuesday, March 21st, all day long
  • Effects? All ASEAG buses are cancelled. Subcontractors should still drive

The buses of the ASEAG stand still for two days. Despite the strike, however, some lines are operated by subcontractors. “Nevertheless, the strike can also affect the use of contractors,” ASEAG points out. On Wednesday (March 22), the buses should then run regularly again.

ASEAG strike in Aachen: These buses should still drive

The subcontractors are said to offer the following trips, among others, despite the ASEAG strike:

  • The bus traffic in the Eifel including school traffic and the express bus lines between Aachen and Eifel
  • The NetLiners in Monschau, Roetgen, Simmerath, Aachen-Nord (Laurensberg / Richterich and the surrounding area). There may be restrictions when booking by telephone. Online booking will be possible as usual
  • Other journeys carried out by ASEAG contractors
  • Note: The school buses in Aachen and the city region are only operated by subcontractors, so they should drive

Deutsche Bahn is also not affected by the strike. S-Bahn or regional trains may therefore be suitable, especially for longer distances within the city region. These should run regularly on both days.

What can I do if the bus and train go on strike?

When there is a public transport strike, i.e. when buses and trains stand still, many people without a car quickly have a problem. The way to work can be a real challenge for many employees. 24RHEIN has compiled an overview of the options employees have in the event of a public transport strike.

If you want to switch to a taxi because of the strike, you should note that you will not be reimbursed for these costs. The mobility guarantee does not apply in the event of a strike.

Why there is a strike again at ASEAG

The last ASEAG strike was just a few days ago. As early as March 13, the buses in the Aachen area were not running. The background to the wave of strikes is still the wage dispute in the public sector. The Verdi union is demanding a wage increase of 10.5 percent, but at least 500 euros, for the approximately 2.5 million employees in the public sector. After two rounds of negotiations, there is still no agreement.

Verdi had therefore already announced at the end of February that it would expand the strikes. Most recently, commuters felt the effects of this. Meanwhile, March 21 is developing into a big day of strikes in North Rhine-Westphalia. Public transport is paralyzed in many places. For example, the DVG in Duisburg went on strike that day. The Rheinbahn in Düsseldorf and the KVB in Cologne, like the ASEAG, are on strike over two days. The third round of negotiations will take place in Potsdam from March 27th to 29th. (bs)
