“Layla” is the excitement of the summer. The scandalous song is forbidden at many festivals. At the Stuttgart Weindorf, however, DJ Robin, the original interpreter, sings it himself. How the Ballermann star spontaneously appeared.

The waiter in the black T-shirt, a passer-by thinks to herself on Tuesday evening when she happens to pass Inge’s arbor and experiences a lot of enthusiasm in it, sings damn well. Next to the pianist is a young man who, like most of the audience, is absolutely sure of the lyrics. “The beautiful Layla”, sounds loudly at the late hour shortly before the tattoo, “she is more beautiful, younger, hornier.”

But no, there’s no waiter singing – it’s the original artist himself. It’s DJ Robin, who has been at number one in the German single charts with his colleague Schürze for weeks. The musician, who lives in Ditzingen, actually only came to the Weindorf as a normal guest, but then he allowed himself to be persuaded by his table to sing the scandalous song live – almost the entire arbor roared along.

With “Layla” the SPD got into trouble at the Stuttgart CSD

First of all, Würzburg banned the playing of the Ballermann hit “Layla”, which was criticized as sexist, at the Kiliani folk festival. The media hype that resulted from this brought the song about a “puff mama” more and more into the conversation and even higher. The majority of Oktoberfest hosts, said spokesman Peter Inselkammer, will not play “Layla”. At the end of July, the SPD had great anger when it came out that the DJ of the party at the Stuttgart CSD only played the song, which is considered misogynistic and hurt people’s feelings, on the truck for a short time before people realized with shock what had happened and the hit stopped. And on the usually well-attended Hocketse of wine fans between Marktplatz and Schillerplatz, no one intervenes when “Layla” thunders at full throttle?

Weindorf organizers want “no songs like ‘Layla’”

The guests in Inges Laube do not belong to the typical Ballermann audience – but the over 50 generation is also sure of the lyrics to “Layla” and has fun with it. No way, the song is only for young people who bawl about the whorehouse when they are drunk! Jens Zimmermann from the board of the Weindorf-Verein Pro Stuttgart reacted coolly to the musical incident. “Of course, songs like ‘Layla’ are not the kind of music we want at Weindorf,” he tells our newspaper. The discussion about this song “kept the media busy” over the summer, he explains, adding: “Everything has already been said about it.” In other words: the organizers are not happy about DJ Robin’s spontaneous appearance, but want to Debate about expensive mineral water not another excitement for the popular festival.

The president of the moving van does not understand the outrage

DJ Robin met friends from the Möbelwagen carnival company in Inges Laube, whose carnival prince was the young man from Ditzingen in 2019. Actually, the “Layla” creator just wants to drink his quarter in peace. But then the other guests urge him to sing the summer hit 2022. At the end of the evening, shortly before closing time, he is ready for it. The piano player didn’t even know the song. But he soon gets the hang of it.

Thomas Klingenberg, the president of the furniture van, who is sitting at the table with DJ Robin on this enjoyable evening, does not understand the outrage surrounding “Layla”. “Anyone who is against the song should no longer use the words young, beautiful and cool,” he says. The argument about political correctness also bothers him in the matter of Winnetou. In a country that stands for freedom of expression, nobody should think about bans, he says.
