A father and two children (1, 4) lost their lives in an accident on the A5, a mother (39) is struggling with death, and a 7-year-old is in the hospital.
There are pictures that affect and basically say everything: Unabated, a father (46) on the A5 near Poysdorf (Mistelbach district) with a BMW Touring crashed into the trailer of a heavy-duty vehicle parked in a breakdown bay. With incredible physical force, the sheet metal, glass and steel were completely deformed, the BMW wedged itself under the trailer, the occupants felt tons (Note: In the event of an impact with a rigid obstacle at just 50 kilometers per hour, a 70-kilo person weighs around 1.3 tons; Source: Wiener Zeitung).
Mother struggles with death
The 43-year-old truck driver, who was taking a break with his son (13) in the breakdown bay, immediately set the rescue chain in motion. The fire brigade had to cut all five occupants out of the wreck (“Today” reported). There was no more help for the driver, a family man (46) from the Czech Republic, a boy (1) and a girl (4), they could only be rescued dead.
Only the 39-year-old mother and a 7-year-old survived the tragedy to date. The seriously injured girl was taken to the Donaustadt Clinic by Christophorus 2. The critically injured mother was flown to the Brno hospital by rescue helicopter Krystof 4. The 39-year-old’s chances of survival should not be too high, her condition is absolutely critical.
The family was driving the BMW on Friday night on the A5 from Vienna towards Brno. According to the assessment of the executive, fatigue should be the cause of the accident. The 46-year-old should have fallen asleep briefly and turned the car to the right – as a result, the BMW crashed into the semitrailer at high speed without braking.
Charge against truck driver
According to police spokesman Johann Baumschlager, the 43-year-old truck driver is now being investigated. Because the driver should not have taken a break in the breakdown bay. “Quiet times are only to be observed in designated parking spaces, but not in a breakdown bay or even on the breakdown lane,” explains the chief inspector. The truck driver will be reported to the public prosecutor’s office in Korneuburg after the investigation is complete.
