The Gazette | Paragliding pilot dies in accident during competition in Castelo

A Swiss paragliding pilot who participated in the World Cup of the category, held at Rampa de Ubá, in Patrimônio do Ouro, in Castelo, in the south of Espírito Santo, died this Wednesday morning (22), after an accident near a rocky wall. According to one of the organizers of the competition, he is an experienced athlete, who is part of the Swiss team, which is one of the best in the world.

According to the Nucleus of Operations and Air Transport (Notaer), the athlete’s death was confirmed at 11:50 am. The pilot fell at a distance of approximately 1 km from the ramp. He lost control of the equipment, probably because he was at low altitude, went through some turbulence and collided with the rocky wall.

Witnesses saw the moment of the accident and called the Fire Department, but due to the difficult access to the place, the Notaer was demanded. Initially, a medical team accompanied the action with the aim of providing help as quickly as possible. But after searching with two aircraft, the body was found already lifeless.

Initially, the military tried to remove the victim, but the rocky wall where she was made it difficult for the helicopter to approach. With that, firefighters check a ground access point to reach the scene.

One of the organizers of the competition, Frank Brown regretted what happened and said that the race is suspended and the organization will meet to decide whether to cancel the event or not.
