A few days before Russia invaded Ukraine, US President Joe Biden spoke at a press conference, saying, “If Russia invades…there will be no Nord Stream 2. We will finish it.”

This comes amid assurances by the European Union’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell that the gas leak in two undersea pipelines linking Russia with Germany this week is not a coincidence, amid indications of deliberate action.

On the other hand, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, said today that Moscow is awaiting the European Union’s reaction to the statements of former Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorsky, who posted in a tweet a voice from the location of the gas leak attached to the phrase “Thank you to the United States.”

The tweet came in the wake of the leak that occurred in the famous gas transmission line “Nord Stream 1” as well as “Norstream 2,” amid frequent speculations of deliberate sabotage of the line that transports gas from Russia to Europe.

It is noteworthy that the United States became the largest global exporter of liquefied gas in the world during the first half of 2022 after replacing Russia in European gas exports.

The Polish politician said there is no shortage of gas pipeline capacity to transport gas from Russia to Western Europe, including Germany.

“All the Ukrainian and Baltic states have opposed Nordstream construction for 20 years,” Sikorsky added. “Now there is $20 billion in scrap metal on the sea floor, another cost to Russia of its criminal decision to invade Ukraine.”
