Google celebrates his birthday.. Who is Hamed Gohar, “King of the Red Sea”?

The Google search engine celebrated the birthday of the late Dr. Hamed Gohar, who was born on November 15, 1907 in Cairo, and presented one of the most famous scientific programs, the famous “Sea World” program, which he presented for 18 years, to remind us of one of the most important scientific and cultural periods that passed. In Egypt, Dr. Hamed Gohar topped the trend on the Google search engine.

Who is Hamed Gohar?

Hamid Abdel Fattah Gohar was born in Al-Darb Al-Ahmar, Cairo, in 1907. He received his primary education at the Islamic Charity Association School, where he memorized several parts of the Holy Qur’an. Among his teachers was Abdullah Al-Afifi, who was the reason for his love for the Arabic language, so he loved the poetry of Ahmed Shawky and Hafiz Ibrahim. He obtained a baccalaureate degree in the year 1925 from the royal secondary school “Khedive Ismail later”, and joined the Faculty of Medicine, and despite his excellence, he moved to the Faculty of Sciences, which was recent at that time, and obtained a bachelor’s degree with first honors in 1926, and he was appointed as a teaching assistant in Department of Animal Sciences in the same college, and in 1931, he submitted his first master’s thesis, the subject of which was “Exact Anatomy and Endocrine Histology in the Rabbit”, and he obtained a PhD in Science in this branch of knowledge, and Hamid Gohar was the first to obtain a PhD in Science Animal.

The University of Cambridge invited Dr. Hamid Gohar to visit England, and he traveled there in 1937, and stayed there for nearly two years, during which he visited many natural history museums in London, Paris, Berlin and Vienna, and published the results of his scientific research in European scientific journals.

Dr. Hamid Gohar worked as an advisor to the Secretary-General of the United Nations to organize the first International Conference on the Law of the Sea in Geneva in 1958, and was chosen by the International Atomic Energy Agency in 1959, as Chairman of the Committee for the Disposal of Nuclear Waste in the Deep Sea, and worked as an advisor for science and technology in the League of Arab States in 1970, and a member of the complex Arabic language in Cairo in 1973. He was a member of the Advisory Committee of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. He participated in the Arabic scientific dictionaries issued by the Arabic Language Academy, most notably the “Biology in Biology and Agriculture” dictionary, which took 8 years to prepare. He also won the State Prize. Appreciation in Science in 1974 and the Medal of Merit of the first class in 1975.

In honor of him, a preparatory school for girls in Hurghada was named “Dr. Hamed Gohar Preparatory School for Girls.” Residents of the Hafr Al-Batin region in Hurghada recently demanded that the area be renamed instead of its current name.

And about his private life, Dr. Hamed Johar did not marry, as he used to tell his students that he married the sea that gave him his life as he lived as a monk to science, as Abdel Halim Montaser, the pioneer of plant ecology, said about him, “Dr. He was one of his experts, so he came out to people with dozens of research papers published in the most prestigious scientific journals.

He also has a younger brother, the artist Ali Jawhar, who was born in the British capital, London, and joined the commerce school and worked in the petroleum company, and from there to the European program, where he worked as a presenter for news bulletins, and was discovered by director Niazi Mustafa in the sixties of the last century and presented him in the movie “His Excellency the Ambassador.” In 1966, he presented about 60 films and series for cinema and television. He also worked as a broadcaster for the English-language news bulletin on Channel 2 of the Egyptian TV, and he left our world in 1998.

Honoring Dr. Hamed Gohar

During King Farouk I’s visit to Hurghada in 1942, Dr. Hamid Gohar donated a plot of land of 55 acres to establish the rest of the buildings of the marine research station, in appreciation of his talent in scientific research, which is the piece of land on which the Institute of Marine Sciences is currently located.

There is also a rest house for Dr. Hamid Johar and a rest house for senior visitors. King Farouk was staying inside the rest house during his visit to the institute, and a close relationship arose between him and Dr. Hamed Johar. There is an amulet on which is recorded “King Farouk I’s gift to Dr. Hamid Johar” in the Oceanography Museum at the institute.

كان عشقه للكائنات البحرية دور كبير في حصولة علي لُقب “ملك البحر الأحمر” حيث جعله في حاله بحث دائم عن كل ما هو جديد، كما كان يحب رياضة السباحة والتجديف، ولعبت المصادفة دورها في حياته حينما أراد أستاذه أن يكافئه على نجاحه الباهر في أبحاث الماجستير، فرتب له رحلة إلى محطة أبحاث الأحياء المائية في مدينة الغردقة ليعجب بالمكان وتتكرر زياراته له  حتي انتقل للعمل بها عام 1932 تحت رئاسة العالم الإنجليزي سيريل كروسلاند، وأقام إقامة دائمة وتفرغ لأبحاثه التي تناولت الشعاب المرجانية والأسماك والرخويات وعرائس البحر “الأطوم أو بقر البحر”.

Dr. Hamid Gohar assumed the presidency of the research station as the first Egyptian president in 1934 and remained its head for 40 years, during which the institute witnessed diligent scientific activity, as the late Dr. established a museum of aquariums affiliated with the station. Another museum of the Red Sea neighborhoods.

He also conducted important research in the field of marine sciences, and the station now bears the name “National Institute of Marine Sciences and Fisheries” Red Sea Branch, and is affiliated with the Ministry of Scientific Research.

Dr. Hamid Johar presented a famous weekly TV program that was broadcast on Fridays called “The World of the Sea”, for the past 18 years, where he was showing films about various marine creatures and he commented explaining the picture and introducing the different species, their habits and characteristics, and Dr. Hamid Johar had a distinguished voice associated with viewers’ minds over the years.

Hamid Gohar and the jaw of the whale

One of the strangest situations that Dr. Hamed Gohar was famous for was his search for the jaw of the whale, which was narrated by his students. In 1943, Gohar learned of hunting a huge whale in the city of Suez, so he hurried there and found that the whale had been cut up, so he protested against that and took to collect it piece by piece, and discovered That one of his jaws was missing, so he published an advertisement in the newspapers and allocated a reward to whoever returns the lost jaw, and succeeded in recovering it.
