Russia will sign an intergovernmental agreement on nuclear technology for peaceful purposes with Morocco. Under this agreement, it is planned to build a nuclear power plant on Moroccan territory, reports the Russian agency RIA Novosti, which adds that the corresponding order of the Government of the Russian Federation was published on Wednesday on the official portal of legal information.

“The decree approved the draft intergovernmental agreement submitted by Rosatom and agreed with the Russian Foreign Ministry, as well as other authorities and previously drawn up with the Moroccan side,” adds the same Source. Rosatom, which is a Russian public company specializing in the nuclear energy sector, has been instructed with the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to hold talks with Moroccan partners and to sign an agreement, specifies the same Source.

This draft agreement provides in particular for “the design and construction of nuclear power and research reactors, as well as seawater desalination plants and particle accelerators”, notes the agency in its dispatch. It is also planned to explore and develop uranium deposits in Morocco, supply nuclear fuel for power and research reactors, manage spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste, jointly develop reactor technologies , to carry out basic and applied research in the field of peaceful atoms, to use nuclear technologies and radiation for medical, industrial and other peaceful purposes, and to train personnel.

“In general, the objective is to establish and improve the nuclear infrastructure in Morocco”, explains the same Source who recalls that in October 2017, Morocco and Russia signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the field of peaceful nuclear energy.
