Fatal accident at the Rallye du Condroz: the victims are two young people from the region

The Liège public prosecutor’s office confirmed Thursday evening the death of two young people from Hannut and Huy, which occurred on Sunday afternoon during the Condroz Rally. A rally vehicle ran off the road and hit spectators.

“The accident is a road trip of a racing vehicle that took place in the village of Moha, rue Alfonse Nicolas, near number 519,” the statement said.

The two deceased people are spectators who came to attend the event as a couple. They are a 16-year-old Hannutoise and an 18-year-old Hutois.

“They were probably returning to the house of 519, whose inhabitants they knew. They died on the spot,” said the prosecution. “A rather rambunctious group of youngsters were also there and had been the subject of several remarks by the race marshal earlier in the afternoon. The remarks were aimed at getting them out of this area which was dangerous. The two young victims apparently do not belong to this group of young people,” the statement added.

Regarding the human toll, the judicial authorities evoke “an undetermined number” of wounded, whose lives are not in danger. The pilot and his co-pilot were also taken to hospital but did not suffer serious injuries. They have yet to be interviewed by the police. According to the first observations of the automotive expert, the accident was due to a road trip related to the rain and the slippery road. The specialist must still examine the vehicle.
