Misconduct investigation against another senior Toronto police officer

Inspector Joyce Schertzer is facing three charges under the provincial Police Services Act for offenses dating back to 1er May 2022.

All dressed in black, the official appeared serene during her brief 10-minute virtual appearance before the police court. His lawyer, Joanne Mulcahy, was present at the hearing, but not with him.

Her department accuses her of interfering in a case involving her nephew in a road accident. It is written that she received a phone call that day from her daughter warning her that her nephew had just had a collision.

Inspector Schertzer, who works at station 11, dispatched one of her agents to station 14 (which apparently should have dealt with the accident) before going to the scene of the accident herself.

According to the court documents of which Radio-Canada obtained a copy, she spoke with her nephew before giving him leave.

However, the traffic offenses officer could not determine if the individual was intoxicated after being notified that the collision had damaged an unspecified property belonging to the City.

The police department accuses Detective Joyce Schertzer of stopping the investigation and failing in her duty to ensure the collision is thoroughly investigated by police.

He also laments that she took no notes when she had said discussion with her nephew. In addition, no evidence was taken from the scene of the accident contrary to the regulations.

The prosecution has indicated that it has not yet turned over the entire evidence file to the defense of Inspector Schertzer.

Ms. Schertzer will therefore have to return to the administrative court on January 11, 2023. She has not yet announced the plea that she intends to present that day.

The Toronto Police Service declined to comment, as the dispute is before the courts. His inspector is currently suspended with pay.

Inspector Schertzer is not, however, the first high-ranking officer in the service to face charges, which can lead to serious disciplinary measures, if they are cross-checked.

Ironically, Superintendent Riyaz Hussein was the head of the Toronto Police Service Disciplinary Hearings Office before he was relieved of his duties for the duration of his disciplinary investigation.

Superintendent Stacy Clarke is facing charges of professional misconduct over her department’s appointment process.

She is notably accused of having passed on interview questions to a candidate as part of a promotion.

Superintendent Clarke, who is charged under the Ontario Police Services Act, is charged with breach of trust, insubordination and dishonorable conduct, among other charges.

Superintendent Scott Baptist was finally suspended with pay last August following a complaint that he made inappropriate comments to a woman at an event in Quebec.
