As early as 1997, Toyota made the hybrid drive socially acceptable: millions of Toyota Prius were sold. The Japanese car manufacturer has now unveiled the fifth generation of the vehicle – and with it numerous changes.
The first generations with economical engines and conservative design were undoubtedly vehicles for bargain hunters and environmentalists. But Toyota is now taking a different approach: there is even a new platform for this, the C variant of the TNGA. This should impress with improved space and better driving dynamics. The crisp design also catches the eye.
Wedge look with very good aerodynamics
The flat front with the narrowed adaptive LED eyes is already an eye-catcher. The flat pane and the optional black solar roof provide an additional aha effect.
The low window line brings a lot of light into the interior. The crisply cut tail is not only visually effective, but also aerodynamic.
The Toyota Prius gets significantly more power
With 223hp, the hybrid powertrain of the new Toyota Prius is significantly more powerful than before. It is divided into a 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with Atkinson cycle and 148 hp and an electric motor.
The e-machine delivers a whopping 160hp and promises dynamic driving performance at 6.7 seconds for the 100cc sprint. The drive is supported by an almost 50 percent larger battery.
New model in Europe only as a plug-in hybrid
The decision to no longer offer full hybrids is surprising. Instead, the new Toyota Prius will only be available in Europe as a plug-in hybrid. The Japanese want to tap into the steadily growing market share of pure Stromer. Because with a range of up to 80 kilometers, the Toyota Prius PHEV can be moved almost exclusively purely electrically in everyday life.
Market launch in summer 2023
However, we will have to wait a little longer for the Prius. Toyota speaks of a market launch in the summer of 2023 – provided that the supply chains remain stable. Information on prices and other technical details will be provided shortly.
