Video shows moment when avalanche hit skiers in Lech – Vorarlberg

“Oh shit,” says Tiktok user Stevebreake in a video. According to “20 minutes”, it shows exactly the moment when an avalanche fell in Lech/Zürs (Vorarlberg) on ​​Sunday afternoon. The video stops after a few seconds, and the user immediately wanted to rush to the possible victims.

Initially, the authorities assumed ten buried people. The police relied on this or a similar video. Six people could be seen on it, but according to the police, they were not caught by the avalanche. The emergency services had previously rescued a winter sports enthusiast, another was able to free himself and was later treated in the hospital.

According to the Austrian news agency APA, the avalanche went off around 3 p.m. in the area of ​​the 2,720-meter-high Trittkopf, foothills even reached the ski slope.

As the police announced on Monday night, no further missing persons are assumed. However, as a precaution, a search operation will be launched during the course of the day. Four people were injured, one seriously.

Ski slope well attended on Sunday

The region is well visited during the Christmas season. “It’s the same on the piste. It was well attended on Sunday.” A spokeswoman for the Lech/Zürs tourism region said that the last time it snowed in Vorarlberg was on Sunday. “There is currently 80 centimeters of snow on the mountain.” The avalanche danger is level 3 to 4 and is therefore significant.

Basically, in the event of an avalanche accident, rapid action is crucial. “Only half of those completely buried survive. After just 15 minutes, the chance of survival drops drastically,” writes the Swiss Advice Center for Accident Prevention BfU on its website.
