After a very long test phase, exactly a week ago, Google released the Rollout of the new Android Auto interface announced, previously known as “Coolwalk”. However, seven days after this announcement, it appears that most users are still unable to use the new design, and in some cases it has even been withdrawn. What are the developers waiting for?
With Android Auto, Google’s mills grind a little slower than in other areas, we’ve known that since the rollout of the Google Assistant Driving Mode, which took two and a half years. The new Coolwalk design should secure second place, because the new surface was first discovered in October 2021, first announced in May 2022, promised again in summer 2022 and now, at the beginning of January 2023, the rollout has been announced. You have to know that the design has changed only minimally in these 13 months. What have you been doing for so long?
However, anyone who thought that the chapter was finally closed with last week’s announcement is wrong. Because while the announcement sounded a lot like “now,” “immediately,” and “starting today for everyone,” that’s not the case. In the relevant forums and comment columns, one does not read about the successful rollout, but rather about inquiries as to when the time will finally come. Even with brand new smartphones, Android 13 and very new cars with large displays, no success. Some users even report having the theme briefly, only to be greeted by the old interface again the next time they launch Android Auto. It hasn’t opened for me either.
